How to Pack for a DofE Canoe Expedition on the River Severn: A Student’s Guide

Embarking on a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) expedition by canoe is an exciting and rewarding challenge. Navigating the River Severn offers stunning views, opportunities for wildlife spotting, and an unforgettable adventure. However, one of the key aspects of having a successful expedition is packing correctly. Unlike a walking expedition, packing for a canoe-based journey presents unique challenges, you’ll need to balance packing lightly while ensuring everything stays dry and secure.

This handy guide will help you plan and pack efficiently for your DofE canoe expedition, ensuring you’re well-prepared for the trip ahead.

Note:the team at Bear Creek Adventures will help you with all of this preparation prior to your trip- plus lots more advice and support!

1. Waterproof Your Gear

Rule #1 for canoe expeditions: Everything must be waterproofed. Even the calmest rivers have the potential to splash water into your canoe, and the last thing you want is for your essential gear to get soaked.

Here’s how to protect your items:

  • Dry bags: These are your best friends on a canoe expedition. Get a variety of sizes for different items (clothes, electronics, sleeping gear) and make sure they’re well-sealed. Bear Creek Adventures provide these for your canoe expedition.

  • Plastic bin bags or zip-lock bags: For extra protection, you can line the inside of your dry bags with bin bags or put small items like electronics and food into zip-lock bags before placing them in the dry bag.

  • Waterproof phone case: If you're bringing your phone for navigation or emergencies, a waterproof phone case is a must. These cases float and keep your device safe even if it ends up in the water.

2. Keep It Lightweight and Compact

Since you’ll be paddling and portaging your gear, every gram counts. Try to pack light without sacrificing essentials. The general rule is: if you don’t absolutely need it, leave it at home. Focus on multi-purpose items and clothing layers to save space and weight.

Key packing tips:

  • Use a packing checklist: Write down everything you need and stick to it, avoiding any last-minute "just in case" items.

  • Pack compact: Opt for lightweight, packable clothing and gear. Bulky items will take up valuable space in your canoe.

  • Distribute weight evenly: Place heavier items toward the bottom of the canoe and distribute them evenly between the front and back to maintain balance during paddling.

3. Clothing: Think Layers and Quick-Dry Fabrics

On a canoe expedition, the weather can be unpredictable. You may experience rain, wind, or even scorching sunshine over a few days on the River Severn. Layering your clothing allows you to adjust to changing conditions easily.

Essential clothing items:

  • Base layer: Moisture-wicking t-shirts or long-sleeve tops to keep sweat off your skin.

  • Mid layer: A warm fleece or lightweight jacket to wear when the temperature drops.

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers: A good quality waterproof outer layer is essential to protect you from rain and splashes.

  • Quick-dry trousers or shorts: Opt for lightweight, synthetic fabrics that dry quickly if they get wet. Avoid cotton as it takes longer to dry.

  • Hat and sunglasses: Protect yourself from the sun while out on the water. A wide-brimmed hat is great for sun protection, while sunglasses with UV protection will keep your eyes safe.

  • Footwear: Water shoes or old trainers are ideal for paddling. You’ll want something sturdy that can get wet, plus a dry pair of shoes or lightweight sandals for wearing around camp.

  • Warm hat and gloves: Even in summer, evenings can get chilly, especially near water.

4. Sleeping Gear: Stay Warm and Dry

At the end of a long day of paddling, you’ll want to rest well. Make sure your sleeping gear is suitable for the conditions you’ll encounter, and most importantly, keep it dry!

  • Sleeping bag: Choose one that is lightweight but rated for the temperatures you’ll face. A synthetic sleeping bag is usually best for wet environments as it retains warmth even when damp.

  • Sleeping mat: A compact, inflatable sleeping mat adds comfort and insulation between you and the ground.

  • Dry bag for sleeping gear: Store your sleeping bag and mat in a dry bag to ensure they stay dry throughout the day.

5. Food and Cooking Gear

Since you’ll be carrying your food and cooking supplies, choose items that are lightweight, easy to prepare, and provide enough energy for the physical demands of paddling.

Packing food for a canoe expedition:

  • Lightweight, non-perishable food: Dried meals, pasta, rice, porridge, nuts (as long as no-one in your group has an allergy), and dried fruit are great options. Pre-pack your meals in zip-lock bags to save space and reduce waste.

  • Stove and fuel: Bring a lightweight camping stove and enough fuel to last the expedition. Make sure you have a waterproof way to carry matches or a lighter.

  • Mess kit: A lightweight pot, pan, spork, and a small cup will cover your cooking and eating needs. Look for items that are stackable and easy to pack.

  • Water bottle or hydration system: Bring a refillable water bottle or hydration bladder. Ensure you have access to clean drinking water along the route or bring water purification tablets or a filter system.

6. Safety and Navigation Essentials

Safety is a top priority during your DofE expedition. Make sure you’re equipped with the right tools to handle any situation that may arise.

Key safety items:

  • Buoyancy aid: A properly fitting buoyancy aid is mandatory. This will be provided by your expedition provider, but ensure you wear it at all times on the water.

  • First aid kit: Pack a personal first aid kit with essentials like plasters, antiseptic wipes, blister treatment, and any personal medications.

  • Map and compass: Even though you’ll be following the river, it’s important to know your location at all times. A waterproof map case is essential to keep your navigation tools dry.

  • Whistle: Useful for emergency signaling.

  • Torch or headlamp: A headlamp with spare batteries will be invaluable for navigating camp at night.

  • Suncream and insect repellent: Protect yourself from sunburn and bug bites, especially when spending long hours outside on the water.

7. Camp and Personal Hygiene Items

After a long day of paddling, setting up camp efficiently is crucial for a comfortable night’s rest. The below advice depends on where you'll be staying. If a campsite has been organised, you may not need biodegradable toiletries, for example.

  • Tent: A lightweight, waterproof tent shared among your group is ideal. Pack it in a dry bag to keep it from getting wet.

  • Toiletries: Bring biodegradable soap, toothpaste, and a toothbrush. A quick-dry towel and a small pack of wet wipes are also handy for keeping clean.

  • Trowel: For any wild toileting, a small trowel is essential. Follow the Leave No Trace principles by burying waste and packing out any toilet paper.

8. Optional Extras for Comfort

While you should focus on packing light, a few extras can make your expedition more enjoyable:

  • Journal and pen: Recording your experiences can be a rewarding way to reflect on your journey.

  • Camera or phone (in a waterproof case): Capture memories, but remember to keep it protected from the water.

Final Thoughts

Packing for a DofE canoe expedition on the River Severn requires a balance of practicality and preparation. By keeping your gear light, waterproof, and organised, you’ll be ready to tackle the challenges of the river while staying comfortable and safe. Remember, the key is to pack smart, stay dry, and enjoy every moment of your adventure!

Good luck, and happy paddling!
